Negative Magic

Curses, Hexes and Horcruxes

Lesson 1: Introduction to Negative Magic

What is Negative Magic?

Negative magic is a kind of magic that inflicts harm, discomfort, pain or destruction to creatures or objects and also by either taking power away from them or transferring power from them to another source by force. Negative magic is intended to be used to attack creatures or objects under a spell. This type of magic is not necessarily "evil" in its form, though it causes harm, but the adversity of its effect depends upon the intention of the caster.

Though it was historically favored by dark wizards, magic with negative powers is employed by wizards of all walks of life. Its uses can be seen through the various spells and interesting objects that wizards had been able to know for centuries.

There are generally two ways of imposing Negative magic. The first was through the use of incantations, both verbal and non-verbal. The form of casting depends upon the ability of the witch/wizard, whether they do it with or without a wand in hand. The three types of Negative magic using incantations include curses, hexes and jinxes.

On the other hand, the second was through the use of certain objects (can be both non-living and living things), that would primarily act as a reservoir for the intended negative magic with a part of a person's soul.

Negative Magic: Spells

1. Jinxes

A jinx is a spell with negative effects used chiefly for the amusement of observers and the minor discomfort of the victim. They are also part of defensive magic that have been thought in your Defense Against the Dark Arts classes.

Jinx effects can be removed by a Counter-Jinx, and they can be prevented by an Anti-Jinx.

Wilbert Slinkhard said a "Counter-Jinx" was improperly named, and that "Counter-Jinx is a name wizards give their spells to make them sound more friendly."

Common examples:
Levicorpus                                    Silencio
Tallantalegra                                 Anti-Cheating Spell
Langlock                                      Impediment Jinx
Revulsion Jinx                              Confundus

2. Hexes

A Hex is less powerful than a Curse and more powerful than a Jinx. They are considered by some as a minor kind of Dark Magic, but Hexes can also be used for protection by distracting people or creatures.

It will be further expounded later in the next lesson.

3. Curses

A curse is a magic spell used with the intention of causing harm, control, or terror over others. They are also commonly used during duels.

Additional information and a separate topic about the Unforgivable curses will be further discussed later in the succeeding lessons.

Negative Magic: Objects

Horcruxes

A Horcrux is an object of extremely Negative Magic in its course which was really intentional by the agent. It is described in the book, Magick Moste Evile as "the wickedest of all magical inventions". It is also defined as any object which contains a part of an individual's soul.

Relevant information will follow in the subsequent lessons.
